Ceramic coating, judged before it is sold to you

A coating is a sacrificial layer that takes the sun and salt instead of your gelcoat. It is genuinely worth it on the right boat and a waste of four figures on the wrong one, and the difference is entirely in what is underneath it and what happens afterwards.

A coating is only as good as what is under it

A ceramic coating is a sacrificial layer bonded to the surface of the gelcoat. It does two useful things on a Palm Beach boat: it takes the ultraviolet and salt punishment instead of the gelcoat, and it makes the bi-weekly wash meaningfully easier because less sticks to it.

What it does not do is fix anything underneath it. A coating over oxidized or scratched gelcoat locks that condition in and makes it harder to correct later, which is why the prep is most of the job and most of the cost.

Vantage does not apply coatings. That is done by applicators who do it properly, in the right conditions, with the right products. What Vantage does is judge whether your boat is a candidate, source the applicator, read the quote, and inspect the result.

What a proper coating job involves

Each of these is judged on its own, because skipping one is how a coating fails early.

  • Honest assessment first

Is the gelcoat sound enough to coat, or does it need correction first? Coating a chalked hull is the single most common way owners waste four figures on this.

  • Correction and decontamination

The surface corrected as needed, then chemically decontaminated and stripped of every wax and polish residue. A coating will not bond through leftover polish oils, and a poor bond is a failed coating.

  • Controlled conditions

Coatings need temperature, humidity, and time to cure. An open dock in a Palm Beach August afternoon is not where a good result comes from, which is why location is part of the scope.

  • Realistic product and coverage

What is being coated, hull sides, topsides, hardtop, metals, glass, and how many layers. The scope varies far more between quotes than owners expect, which is what makes them hard to compare.

  • Maintenance regime

Coated boats still need washing, with pH neutral soap rather than anything aggressive, and most products want a maintenance topper at intervals. A coating is a change to the routine, not an end to it.

  • Realistic lifespan

In this sun, on a boat that lives outdoors, expect meaningfully less than the marketing number, especially on horizontal surfaces. A quote built on the marketing number is a quote to be skeptical of.

When a coating is genuinely worth it

These are the conditions that make the cost worth carrying, not a sales pitch for every boat.

  • The gelcoat is sound, or has just been properly corrected, so the coating is protecting something worth protecting
  • The boat lives outdoors in full sun, which is most boats in this corridor
  • The owner is not aboard often enough to be washing her weekly themselves
  • There is a wash schedule in place that will actually maintain it
  • The boat is being kept several more years, so the cost has time to pay back
  • The alternative is waxing two or three times a year and nobody is doing that

When it is not the right answer

A coating over gelcoat that needs restoration is money spent sealing in a problem. A coating on a boat that is being sold this season rarely returns what it costs. And a coating on a boat that will go back to being washed once a month will not last the way the quote implies, because the wash schedule was always the real variable.

There is also the simplest case: some boats are perfectly well served by wax on a proper cycle, and the difference the coating makes does not justify the number.

Vantage takes no percentage of an applicator's invoice, which is the only reason a recommendation either way is worth anything.

Common questions

Not seeing yours? Contact us.

Do you apply the coating?
No. Coatings are applied by specialist applicators in controlled conditions. Vantage judges whether the boat is a candidate, sources the applicator, reviews the quote, and inspects the finished work.
How long does a ceramic coating last on a Palm Beach boat?
Less than the marketing number, particularly on hardtops, foredecks, and other horizontal surfaces that take direct sun all year. Any quote should be judged on the assumption of a hard-working Florida environment rather than a garaged one.
Do I still need to wash the boat?
Yes. A coating makes washing easier and more effective, it does not replace it. Most products also want a maintenance topper at intervals, which is part of the schedule rather than an extra.
Can it go over oxidized gelcoat?
It physically can, and it is a bad idea. The condition gets sealed in and is harder to correct afterwards. If the gelcoat needs correcting, that happens first or the coating is not worth doing.

Is your boat a candidate?

Send daylight photographs, the age of the boat, and how she is maintained. You will get a straight answer on whether a coating is worth the money on her.
