Boat repair, managed and reviewed before you approve it

In a town with a thousand vendors, the hard part is not finding one. It is knowing whether the quote in front of you is the job your boat actually needs. Vantage sources the vendor, oversees the work, and puts a licensed second opinion on the bid first.

The problem is not finding a mechanic in Fort Lauderdale

There are more marine trades per square mile in Broward County than in almost any market on earth. Finding somebody who will take the job has never been the hard part. Knowing whether the quote you have just been handed is reasonable is.

Most owners are working from an information deficit that no amount of shopping around fixes. Three quotes for slightly different scopes are not comparable. A number that sounds high may be fair for the hours involved, and a number that sounds reasonable may be for half the job with the rest arriving as extras.

Vantage manages the repair rather than performing it. The vendor is sourced from Captain Trace's own network, the work is overseen at the boat, and the bid is read by a licensed captain before it comes to you for approval.

How a repair runs

The same sequence whether it is a failed bilge pump or a generator that has to come out.

  • Found on the weekly visit

Most jobs surface before they are emergencies, because someone is aboard the boat every week. You get it in writing the same day, with photos and a plain reading of how urgent it actually is.

  • The right vendor, not the available one

Sourced from a working network of Broward mechanics, electricians, electronics techs, fiberglass shops, divers, and yards. Chosen for the job and the boat rather than for who picks up the phone.

  • Independent bid review

Scope, labor hours, parts, and what has been quietly left out. Read by someone with no stake in the number being higher, before you approve anything.

  • Overseen and closed out

Captain Trace meets the vendor at the boat, watches the work, and checks it before sign-off. The job, the invoice, and the parts land in the boat's maintenance record.

The repairs that come up most in this corridor

Every one of these is performed by an independent licensed specialist. Vantage sources, coordinates, oversees, and reviews.

  • Raw water pumps, impellers, and heat exchangers, usually after a strainer was left to pack up
  • Bilge pumps, float switches, and high water alarms that quietly stopped working weeks ago
  • Shore power inlets and cords corroded or heat damaged in the humidity
  • Battery banks taken flat and left there, and chargers that failed without anyone noticing
  • Air conditioning pumps and units, which fail in the season they are needed most
  • Fuel contamination, water in the tanks, and polishing after a boat has sat
  • Stuffing boxes, shaft seals, and running gear vibration picked up on a sea trial
  • Gelcoat and fiberglass damage from dock contact in current or weather

Why bid review is the part that matters

A boatyard will quote your job. What no boatyard will do is give you a second opinion on its own estimate, and that gap is where most of the money in boat ownership quietly goes. Not to fraud, but to scope that grew, hours that were generous, parts assumed to be necessary, and lines nobody questioned because nobody reading the quote knew what the work should take.

Every quote is read against the same list before it reaches you: is this the job the boat needs, are the hours realistic for this work on this boat, are the parts sensibly specified, what is missing, and what happens if it waits.

Vantage does not perform the trades and does not take a percentage of the vendor's invoice. That is the whole reason the review is worth anything.

Common questions

Not seeing yours? Contact us.

Can I use my own mechanic?
Yes, and plenty of owners do. Vantage coordinates with the vendor you already trust, meets them at the boat, and still reviews the bid before you approve it.
Do I need a management retainer to use this?
It works best alongside one, because the weekly visit is what catches the problem early and the maintenance record is what makes the review sharper. A single project can still be handled on its own.
How fast can you get somebody to the boat?
That depends on the trade and the season, and you will get an honest answer rather than an optimistic one. What Vantage can promise is that the call is made by someone the vendor already knows, which in Broward is worth more than any published response time.
What if the recommendation is to do nothing?
You will get that recommendation. Bid review is not a formality on the way to approving a job, and deferring is sometimes the right call. When it is, you also get told what deferring will cost by next season.
