Outboard and engine repair, managed on your behalf
Vantage does not turn wrenches on your outboards. It does something owners find harder: knowing which Broward specialist to call, getting the boat in front of them, reading the quote critically before you approve it, and standing there while the work happens.
Vantage manages the work, the specialists perform it
This needs saying plainly before anything else. Vantage does not rebuild lower units, pull powerheads, or repower a transom. Outboard work is a trade, and it is done by certified technicians who do it every day and who carry the tooling, the diagnostics, and the insurance for it.
What Vantage does is the part an owner is worst placed to do alone: knowing which Broward shop is actually good at your engines, getting the boat to them or them to the boat, reading the quote critically before you approve it, watching the work happen, and checking it before it is signed off.
On outboards that gap matters more than on almost anything else, because the difference between a sensible diagnosis and an expensive one is often a single decision: service it, rebuild it, or repower. Owners get quoted the third far more often than the boat needs it.
What gets sourced and overseen
Certified technicians perform the work, and this is what Vantage manages around it.
Diagnostics and service
Fault codes read properly, compression and leak-down where it is warranted, and scheduled service done to the manufacturer's interval rather than to whatever the last shop wrote on the invoice.
Lower units and running gear
Gear oil condition read as the diagnostic it actually is, seals and water intrusion caught early, and propeller and shaft damage assessed before it becomes a rebuild.
Fuel systems
Ethanol damage, water in the fuel, failing lines and primer bulbs, and injector work. The most common outboard failure in this corridor is a fuel problem wearing an engine problem's clothes.
Repower
When the engines genuinely are done, the repower gets scoped properly: brand and horsepower against the hull, rigging and controls, the transom, and competing quotes read side by side before you commit.
Where bid review saves the most money
Outboard work carries the widest spread between a fair quote and a padded one of anything on a boat. These are the questions a quote gets read against.
- Is this a repower quote on engines that a service and a fuel system repair would return to health?
- Are the labor hours in line with what that job takes on that engine and that transom?
- Are parts quoted as OEM where OEM is genuinely required, and where it is not?
- Has diagnostic time been charged separately and then charged again inside the repair?
- Is the rigging, controls, and gauge work included in a repower number or waiting to appear later?
- Does a second quote from a different Broward shop change the picture enough to be worth the delay?
- What actually happens if this is deferred to the end of the season?
Catching it before it is a repair
Most outboard failures on managed boats are prevented rather than repaired, and they are prevented by the weekly visit. Engines get looked over, fuel is watched for water and phase separation, and anything that has changed since last week is reported in writing the same day.
Outboards on a boat that sits are their own category of problem. Fuel goes off, seals dry out, and a boat that has not been run in two months does not want to start on the morning you finally have time to use her. Part of the weekly program is making sure that is not how your season starts.
The engines themselves are only ever serviced by the specialists. What the program buys you is that the specialist gets called at the right time, for the right reason, and gets checked afterwards.
Common questions
Not seeing yours? Contact us.
- Do your technicians work on my engines?
- They are not Vantage technicians. Outboard work is performed by independent, certified specialists who are licensed and insured for it. Vantage sources them, oversees the work, and reviews the bid before you approve it.
- I have a repower quote. Can you review it?
- Yes, and it is one of the more valuable things Vantage does. Send what the boat is, what the engines are, and what the shop has proposed, and you will get a straight reading of the scope before you commit to a five figure decision.
- Can you get the boat to the shop?
- Yes. Captain Trace is a licensed USCG captain, so moving the boat to the yard or the shop and back is captain work billed for the time it takes, rather than another vendor to coordinate.
- Do you mark up the shop's invoice?
- No. The retainer pays for the management. Independent bid review only means something if there is nothing pulling the number up, and that is only true if Vantage is not taking a percentage of it.
