Miami

Outboard repair, managed and reviewed on your behalf

The most expensive decision an outboard owner makes is service, rebuild, or repower, and most owners make it with only the selling shop's opinion in front of them. Vantage sources the right technician, oversees the work, and reads the quote first.

The repower question is where the money is

Miami runs on outboards. Center consoles, bay boats, and increasingly large offshore boats on triples and quads, all in salt water, most of them used hard for part of the year and left sitting for the rest of it.

The single most expensive decision an outboard owner makes is whether to service, rebuild, or repower, and it is a decision most owners make with only one opinion in front of them: the opinion of the shop that would be doing the work.

Vantage does not perform outboard work. Certified technicians do, with the tooling and the diagnostics for it. What Vantage does is source the right shop, get the boat in front of them, read the quote critically before you approve it, oversee the job, and check it afterwards.

What gets sourced and overseen

Certified technicians perform the work, and this is what gets managed on your behalf.

  • Diagnostics and service

Fault codes read properly, compression and leak-down testing where it is warranted, and scheduled service run to the manufacturer's interval rather than to whatever the last invoice said.

  • Fuel systems

Ethanol damage, water in the fuel, degraded lines, and injector work. On a Miami boat that sits between uses, a fuel problem wearing an engine problem's clothes is the most common failure there is.

  • Lower units and running gear

Gear oil read as the diagnostic it actually is, water intrusion and seal failure caught early, and prop and shaft damage assessed before it turns into a rebuild.

  • Repower

When the engines genuinely are finished, the job gets scoped properly: brand and horsepower against the hull, rigging, controls, gauges, and the transom, with competing quotes read side by side.

What a repower quote gets read against

The same questions every time, before a five figure decision reaches you for approval.

  • Would a service and a fuel system repair return these engines to health for a fraction of the cost?
  • Are the labor hours realistic for this engine and this transom?
  • Is rigging, controls, and gauge work inside the number, or waiting to appear as an extra?
  • Are parts specified as OEM where OEM is genuinely required, and where it is not?
  • Has diagnostic time been charged separately and then charged again inside the repair?
  • Does a second quote from a different Miami shop change the picture enough to justify the delay?
  • What is the honest resale effect, and does it change which horsepower makes sense?

Most outboard failures here are prevented, not repaired

Outboards on a boat that sits are a category of their own. Fuel ages, seals dry out, batteries go flat, and the engines that started perfectly in April do not want to start in November when you finally have a free weekend.

The weekly visit is where that gets caught. Engines are looked over, fuel is watched for water and phase separation, batteries are read under load, and anything that has changed since last week is reported the same day in writing.

The engines are only ever serviced by the specialists. What the program buys is that the specialist gets called at the right time, for the right reason, and gets checked afterwards.

Common questions

Not seeing yours? Contact us.

Do you service the engines yourselves?
No. Outboard work is performed by independent certified technicians who are licensed and insured for it. Vantage sources them, oversees the work, and reviews the bid before you approve it.
I have a repower quote. Will you review it?
Yes, and it is one of the most valuable things Vantage does. Send the boat, the engines, the hours, and what the shop has proposed, and you will get a straight reading before you commit to a five figure decision.
Can you get the boat to the shop?
Yes. Captain Trace is a licensed USCG captain, so running the boat to a shop or a yard and back is captain work billed for the time it takes rather than another vendor to coordinate.
My boat is on a lift and has not run in months. Where do I start?
With fuel and batteries, almost always, and with somebody looking at the engines before you try to run them hard. Starting a neglected outboard and immediately loading it is how a service job becomes a repair.
